Since there is no to little info on the internet, let me tell you how I did it.
Zarape, or serape - is a traditional mexican style textile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarape
It is absolutely beautiful.

I was killing myself for 6 years that I didn't get one in Cabos, but now it was a revenge. Picked 2 at Cancun for about 25USD each. They are huge and extremely bright.
Since they were stinking bad out of the loom, it was time to wash them.
I used COLD water to soak each for 10 minutes. One by one, cause 2 would not fit in my bathtub.
Water turned slightly pink after soak.
Drained it, poured another tub of cold water, pre-mixed with 3(!!!) caps of ultra-super-duper-concentrated laundry detergent, soaked blanket in it and hand-washed without bestial vigor for about 15 manutes.
It's a good workout.

Drained, squeesed lightly few times, poured fresh cold water one more tub, let sit for 1 beer, drained, squeesed.
Then I ran cold shower over it for 15 minutes (I don't pay for water), folded to manageable size and rolled a sausage to draw water out.
Let it hang dry.

I don't know what the hell they use in China-Thailand-wherever to color their textile, but mexican colors didn't ran AT ALL. Wanna get my point? Put tougether new underwear from Froot of the Loom and your weddind dress and wash them. I may not held responsible for the result.
Zarape - no effect, just clean.
Hope it helped. Anonymous comments are allowed.

Cold gentle cycle should be just fine, my zarapes survived countless washes with <bold, underlined italic> NO CHANGES AT ALL </bold, underlined italic>. They still bright, beautiful and smell great. Cat loves it.
